Our membership begins at age 12 and our oldest member is well into their 90’s. Our population is diverse and that’s what makes our facilities unique. All our members have their own personal reasons for joining, whether it is to lose weight, to stay fit and maintain current weight, to train for a big race, build strength or just come and take a class and socialize with friends. Below are a few testimonials from our members sharing why they joined the Hunterdon Health and Wellness Centers.
Mom Masters Tough Mudder
“My weight has gone up and down my whole life,” says Mary Ruela, a 38-year-old nurse and mother of two. “I’ve tried aerobics and diets, but they only worked short term. I needed more."
That’s when she booked her first appointment with Gigi Bruggeman at the Hunterdon Health and Wellness Center. First, Mary wanted to lose a few pounds for a family cruise. Then she stepped it up, deciding to join her Navy Reserve husband in a Tough Mudder, an intense 12-mile obstacle course.
Training with Gigi, Mary lost 50 pounds. She also finished the Mudder. “I never dreamed I could do something like that,” Mary says. Along with training, Gigi helped with information about nutrition and diet. She is a great support system.
Personal Training Takes Him to the Next Level
When you hit an exercise plateau, it’s time for a change. “I knew I needed better techniques and more than the equipment I had been using,” says Albert Rodriguez, 45.
Albert specifically chose the Hunterdon Health and Wellness Center as his gym because of the personal trainers on staff there, such as Nick DeTura.
“I wanted to be trained by someone committed to health and fitness,” he says. “Nick got me off just machines and into cardio, free weights and circuit training. He was instrumental in getting me to the next level.”
Working Out Speeds Surgery Recovery
With knee-replacement surgery in his future, Bob Schell figured getting stronger would improve his post-surgery recovery.
“It made sense to strengthen the muscles around the knee before surgery,” says the 68-year-old retiree.
Bob became a Hunterdon Health and Wellness Center member a few years ago, initially to improve his golf swing. For pre-surgery prep, he performed exercises recommended by the hospital rehab planner. Then he worked with personal trainer, Gigi Bruggeman for five weeks.
“I had surgery Tuesday morning, walked around that afternoon and went home Thursday,” he says. “A month later, I walked all the steps of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. I am more fit now than I have ever been.”
Confidence Soars after Working with HMC Trainer
Diagnosed with a mild form of cerebral palsy as a baby, Abigail Conway’s life included a fair share of “probably won’t” and “never will.” Doctors warned her she would never be able to enjoy activities such as riding a bike or skiing.
But after she started working with personal trainer Gigi Bruggeman at the Hunterdon Health and Wellness Center, Abigail’s strength and confidence soared.
“She helped me become more physically active than ever in my life,” says Abigail, 25, who recently started a new computer programming job.
“I would tell Gigi I didn’t think I could do something and she would say, ‘Try anyway,’” she adds.
Abigail’s newfound capabilities have impacted her whole life.
“It has changed the way I look, and the way I walk,” she says. “It’s really changed the way I feel about myself.”
Caroline I. – The Health and Wellness Center has offered classes and opportunities that I have enjoyed all these years. The quality of instruction has been outstanding. Thank you for maintaining your high standards and dedication to offering the best.
Carol C. – It has been 15 years that I have been coming to the gym. I enrolled before it opened up. The gym was a God sent. I was nothing but a couch potato. I always said if something opened nearby I’d be the first one to join. I only live about 5 miles away.
Harold B. – I have been a member of the Hunterdon Health and Wellness Center since it opened in 1998. I continue to enjoy my membership because of the quality of personnel, their advice, the services and the quality of the equipment available for my use. I have utilized the classes, free weights, weight and fitness machines and services such as massage therapy. My wife has also utilized the physical therapy office when she was recuperating from a broken arm. I cannot think of any other facility that I would rather utilize for my and my wife’s fitness and wellness needs.
Bob & Lillian L. – When we joined, we could not begin to imagine how the Hunterdon Health & wellness Center would affect our lives. There have been a variety of options afforded us.
- In the beginning, we were still “young” and into fitness and working out.
- After Bob’s total knee replacement, he went to physical therapy here. This was followed up with just plain waling in the pool.
- Next, Bob joined the Cardiopulmonary Rehab Phase III, which works out three days a week.
- The HHWC not only represents physical therapy, it also presents a “mental” therapy due to its friendly, warm and relaxed atmosphere. Many friendships have developed over the years and we are certain they will continue for years to come.
Even though our needs and reasons for joining the HHWC have changed over the years, we are very thankful that Hunterdon Medical Center chose Whitehouse Station for its original “Wellness” Center.
Frank C. – I highly recommend the Wellness Center for anyone interested in a wellness program. The facilities are well maintained and up to date, upgraded equipment is added on a regular basis. The member’s health and safety is a priority. The staff is highly professional and very friendly, many of them have been working since the facility opened. Whether one is interested in weight control, cardio health, group exercises, weight lifting, aquatics, aerobics, yoga, health seminars, etc. All are available at this club. The wellness center’s association with the Hunterdon Medical Center provides a level of interest in the individual that is not often found in a health club. It is a fun place to workout.
Lauren R. – When I joined, I was unfit and intimidated to go in classes based on previous experiences. At the Hunterdon Health and Wellness Center, every instructor is so wonderful. It’s such a positive experience. I love the cleanliness, the atmosphere, and can’t say enough good things about it. Everyone is there for you. I’ve belong to other clubs and this one is by far the best one I’ve joined. This has been life changing for me it’s now just a part of my day.
